Foreigners may marry in Ukraine on the same terms as citizens. There is one additional requirement — proof of lawful stay in Ukraine.
Documents for registering a marriage
- the foreigner's passport;
- a document confirming lawful stay in Ukraine (visa, entry stamp, residence permit);
- if previously married — a document confirming the marriage ended (divorce certificate, court decision, death certificate);
- documents issued abroad — with an apostille or consular legalisation and a notarised Ukrainian translation.
The application is filed with any civil registry office (DRACS). The marriage is usually registered one month after the application; earlier on certain grounds.
What next
Marriage to a Ukrainian citizen is grounds for a temporary residence permit (family reunification), and after more than two years of marriage — for an immigration permit outside the quota and a permanent residence permit. Foreigners from visa-required countries get a type D visa to enter for this purpose.
If you are abroad and need copies of a marriage certificate or a marital status certificate from the Ukrainian register, they can be obtained through a lawyer's request.
