What it is for
A record of your crossings of the state border helps confirm the dates of your exits and entries: for citizenship or a residence permit, court cases, social payments, checks of length of stay, or disputes with a military enlistment office or an employer.
What you can get
Information from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) on the dates and checkpoints where a person crossed the border. The content and format of the reply are determined by the SBGS; a request does not guarantee that the data will be disclosed.
Two ways
- Request it yourself. Everyone may ask the SBGS directly for data about themselves. Access to your own personal data is free of charge. The review deadlines for such a request are set by the Law “On Personal Data Protection” (Art. 16) and differ from those for a lawyer’s request.
- Through a lawyer’s request online (ggs.com.ua). You choose the border crossing request, fill in your details (full name, date of birth, document, period), pay and sign the documents on the site (КЕП or SignWell). The lawyer prepares the request and sends it to the SBGS; the reply is passed on to you by email. The lawyer’s service is paid.
Deadlines for a lawyer’s request
The reply must be given no later than 5 working days after the authority receives the request. If the request requires a large amount of information or a search through a large body of data, the deadline may be extended to 20 working days in total; the authority notifies the lawyer in writing within the first 5 working days (Art. 24 of the Law “On the Bar and Practice of Law”).
FAQ
Can I get data about another person? Only if there is a legal basis for access: that person’s consent to pass the data to a representative, legal representation, or another basis provided by law. A lawyer’s status alone does not give access to anyone’s confidential data.
Foreigners? Yes, about themselves. Give your citizenship, date of birth, name and details of the document you used when crossing the border. Spell the name as in the document.
Documents or name changed? Give the previous details and, if needed, supporting documents.
What if there is no reply? The lawyer checks that the request was received and whether an extension notice was sent, then chooses the next step: clarification, a repeat request or an appeal. A refusal of access to personal data can be appealed to the Parliament’s Commissioner for Human Rights or in court.
